Ties in to my suspcion of "incentives" discourse; people normally use it to mean financial rewards or career advancement or whatever, but ime people are much more motivated by stuff like "not feeling embarrassed" or "not violating status norms"

a nontrivial number of people I know are living off returns on human capital they accidentally created as 14 year olds
