Stunning breakout far above all previously measured values to set a new national temperature record for Canada of 49.6 °C (121 °F).
This heatwave has reached further above historical means than any other summer heatwave previously recorded anywhere in North America.
what are some examples of scientific communities caring MORE about truth and cheating than video game speed running communities? I don’t think you’d get treated this lightly even in a meme category nber.org/system/files/w…
My first piece for The Atlantic! It’s on the curious contrast between videogame speedrunners (who REALLY care about fraud) and scientists (who in so many cases aren’t bothered at all):
A contrarian view: biology is more theoretical than physic s. We had a mathematically precise theory of genetics before discovering the hereditary material! A beautiful essay from Jeremy Gunawardena: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

Neurons can change what they do depending on the state of the animal. Here, as a songbird starts/stops singing, single neurons rapidly switch between song-locked and movement-locked firing. This flexibility may allow for the reuse of timing related computation.

1) In med school we learned that T2D can’t be cured.
But “cured” is a diffuse term. What do we mean by it? That the insulin sensitivity can’t be restored? That the beta cells can’t recover? That average blood glucose can’t be lowered to normal levels?
5) On top of the fasting he started taking loooong walks every day (>5 h). This last year he has turned down the fasting a little bit, “only” does 24-36 h 3 times a week.
They’ve checked his blood glucose levels twice this year. He’s fasting glucose levels + HB1C has normalized
This whole statement is so transparently written 💜
Epistemic clarity in public statements like this is a huge boon to the commons, allowing others to learn and make good plans. It's so much more common for the underlying mental models, bets, and new information to be concealed.

Everyday I read financial news/“analysis” to be reminded what terrible science looks like. Goldman Sach’s bull report on Enron has to be a classic of classics.
