This massive study shows ego-depletion does not exist. The defense used to be: But there is a meta-analysis of 200 studies showing the effect is real!
Now reflect on the waste. How many non-significant studies were file-drawered to get 200 type 1 errors?

there are so many measurement techniques that are straightforward when you have a "known" control but baffling if you consider the historical need to have generated the "known"
for instance, gel electrophoresis- it's trivial to figure out the mass of your sample when comparing against a ladder sequence of fragments of known mass, but how did they know what mass they were without gel electrophoresis?
similarly the vertigo of realizing that sensitivity + specificity of diagnostic tests isn't done against "reality", it's done by comparing against another test determined to be the "gold standard"
google docs are a disaster. the comment system forces people into giving small tactical comments bound to specific portions of text, instead of sharing strategic consequential feedback. most of the time i get 20 comments on a doc but have no idea if the commenter even liked it
